1) Toronto City Council has made repeated attempts to have all Ontarians celebrate Simcoe Day on the first Monday in August. In other parts of the province, it is simply called Civic Holiday. Write a letter to the premier of Ontario explaining why all citizens in Ontario should celebrate this day as Simcoe Day.

2) What qualities did a Loyalist pioneer need to succeed in Upper Canada? What qualities do new immigrants need to succeed in Canada today? In what ways are your lists similar? In what ways are they different?

Dear McGuinty,

The people of Toronto celebrate Simcoe Day on the first Monday in August, in honor of John Graves Simcoe the founder of Simcoe County. How ever other parts of the Province just take the day as a civic holiday. Everyone in Ontario should celebrate because Mr. Simcoe found Ontario. He came here in 1792 with his wife and kids. Simcoe made several spots along the way. Simcoe helped create the place in which they made York (Modern Today Toronto) , it was first placed in London but Simcoe thought it was to close to the border. Simcoe made several changes to our Province. He laos helped free the slaves and created new and better laws. Everyone should recognize Simcoe, so they should all celebrate Simcoe Day.

Sincerely,

Dear Premier McGuinty,

I think that everyone should celebrate Simcoe Day because John Graves Simcoe was a really great man and he helped everyone in Canada including the slaves that were living in Canada. He started the Slavery Act in 1793, he abolished slavery during this act. He enforced new and good laws that everyone had to follow. He protected everyone by moving the capital of Canada which was Newark, to Ontario. He served as Governer for 4 years. He didn't want to be Governer just for the fun of it, he and his wife asked people what they wanted and needed and they made it happen. I think he was a great man, and that's why we should have people celebrate Simcoe Day.

Sincerely,

Dear Premier Mcgunity,

In our country Canada, only one place in our entire country celebrates August first as Simcoe Day. That one place is Toronto Ontario. Every where else they just call it a civic holiday. I belive that every where that every town and city in our country should call this day Simcoe Day. My reasoning for this is because John Graves Simcoe practically founded Canada.

He Started government in Canada. He even created two councils in Upper Canada, The Legislated assembly and The Executive Council. We even have a county named after him, we have roads named after him, we even have a lake named after him. He even planed our highway systems. He even ended slavery in Canada. He brought the population up from just a few thousand, to around fifteen to twenty thousand people in just a few year of living there. He made our country very successful in the years that he lived here and was the governor of upper Canada. These are my reasonings to why our country celebrate August first as Simcoe Day rather than just a civic holiday.

Sincerely,

Dear Premier McGuinty,

I think that all citizens should celebrate civic day because John Graves Simcoe did a lot for the slaves, he helped free them. He deserves a holiday for all of his hard work. He was also a good governor. He also served Britain in The American Revolution, so he was no stranger. He also established a capital at York. Simcoe organized the government and helped design the highways. Although he was governor for 4 years he put policies in place that would well serve the colony of Upper Canada for years to come.

One quality that a loyalist would need to survive in Upper Canada would be good hunting skills because hey would need a backup plan if they ran out of food. Hunting skills would also come in handy if the Patriots attacked, because they would be able to fight back.
Another quality would probably be good craftsmanship, for building homes or shelters. With good craftsmanship, they would be able to finish their home quickly and help others for a price, it would make a good profit.
It would help to have a sort of wide imagination, so you could put everything to good use, and have good ideas so nothing can be wasted. They would be able to figure things out quicker then everyone else and have an open mind.

One quality an immigrant in Canada today would need is bilingual skills to be able to communicate with other people better, and to be able to make more friends.
Another good quality would be is organizational habits, so it would be easier to get a job and be able to have a tidy home. Organization would come in handy with education too, so the immigrant would be able to complete school, and then get a good job with a good pay.
It would be good to have a talent of some sort so that you can have some fun, like singing at a dance or something, it would defiantly help.

A quality both Loyalists and Immigrant today would both be helpful to have is probably an open mind to all things, because you would be able to try new things, even if its strange.

Early immsgrants would need to be able to survive the extreme diffrence in climate in fact they still do. The tempture in other countries even the U.S is much warmer then here as it. Pepole will often come to Canada and be frezzing even in the spring for immagrints at the time without proper shelter they woud have froze as even today with modren technolgy and global warming they stil find it unberbly cold. so in counclusion a huge threat back then and now is the frigid cold of the Canadain winter.

In Upper Canada it was very harsh and people had to start from scratch. They would have to clear the land, hunt, build a home and more. In order to do these important things to survive they will need strategies such as; strength, must be able to utilize a gun or arrow, must also be able to use an ax. For other important things they may need to be able to fish, cook and build.

Immigrants in Canada today need the qualities of surviving the cold and most importantly, speak the language. Without the ability to speak english and/or french, they would have no chance of surviving. They would also know very little people when they arrived in a new country.

These lists compare because back in the late 1700s-early 1800s they fled into complete wilderness. At the moment they would have no houses or food and very little tools. When you look at Upper Canada today, immigrants have a broad choice of where to live and don't have to start as much from scratch, all they must do is know or learn the language/languages. What both time periods have in common is that they both knew little people when they started, they needed to find a new home and had to start at least a bit from scratch.

I believe that in order for a pioneer to succeed in Upper Canada, they need to have lived there and have kept their land fertile for at least two years. And if they came their with their family, then they need to have kept enough food for their family so that they wouldn't starve. They need to have gotten a job and cleared their land. That is what I think the pioneers needed to succeed in Upper Canada.
Now a days, in order to succeed, you need to have gotten a job. Another thing that you need to do to succeed is to have raised a family. You need to make sure you have enough food to supply your family, and you can keep your land however you want. So in other words, there are some things that have stayed the same, and some things that have changed within that time period.

Dear mcguinty,
I am righting to address you about the civic holiday aka, Simcoe day. the reasoning about me righting this that i feel we should address this day as simcoe day because john grave simcoe was such an important man in our Canadian history that i feel it is like a kick in the face not to have this day named after him because he made alot of great decisions for Ontario and changed canada as we know it.
secondly, he did many things to help out our province such as freeing the slaves and helped created York ( known as Toronto today ) those are just two of the resons i think we should make this holiday named simcoe day that is all i have to say.

The people of Toronto should celebrate Simcoe Day because this man did lots, for modern day Toronto. He's the Founder of this massive city, he also enforced so many laws. He helped make York(Now Toronto). He also eventually stopped slavery. He also noticed a problem when he first came to Canada. The original capital(Newark, Niagara) was too close to the border so he traveled to York, making new places along the way. So he then made York the Capital(Toronto). So you do you realize now, how much he did for the province and city? This is why I think they should celebrate Simcoe Day.

Some qualities that the pioneer loyalists would probably have needed to survive was most likely how to hunt, grow crops, raise cattle, and and cook and clean raw meat. Thus is because they would've needed how to hunt so that they could receive a decent amount of protein in their daily diet. They would also have to know how to clean and cook the raw meat because if it wasn't cleaned well enough there could still be germs inside of the animals flesh and if a human was to eat that, chances are that they would get severely sick or possibly even die.
Some skills that you would need to live in the twenty first century would probably be, to know how to clean, raw, packaged meat and every now and again how to hunt. There is still quite a few families that go hunting every year.
Some similarities in todays life and the lives that the pioneers re very alike. But then again, there is also some skills that are very different. For instance, some people till hunt for their food. But now you can also go to the supermarket and buy prepackaged meat for $2.50. Some things that are different is that they couldn't always go to the supermarket and buy household supplies, they had to make their own. Back then, they didn't have grocery or hardware stores. Also the only time when we really have to clean our own meat besides just rinsing it after you take it out of the package, is when you hunt it yourself. In 1789, the only way they could get meat was by hunting so they always had to clean and thoroughly disinfect their meat.

There was many Loyalists or Tories that fled to Upper Canada after the American Revolution. The Loyalists then had to be very hard working, determined, generous, people to make sure that their land would succeed. They had to literally clear acres and acres of forest to settle in Canada and to have enough fire wood to live in the winter. Tories did what they had to do to survive and immigrants even today, are like the Tories in many ways.

Every day we have a large sum of immigrants fleeing/coming to Canada. These immigrants need many qualities to succeed in Canada. They definitely need to be hard working. They have to be working as hard as they can to be successful in Canada to support their family and to have a home and maybe even some land. Next, they need to be determined. They have to set realistic goals and follow through on them to allow them to have a much better life than what they had. Lastly, they need generosity. This is important because if they are generous to people, people will want to help them and can give them a much greater and easier life than if they were rude and selfish. The Tories of the seventeen hundreds and the immigrant we have today have many of the same qualities.

The Tories and the immigrants we have now fleeing to Canada have much of the same qualities. They are both hard working. This is because for the Tories they had to clear large sums of land to succeed in the harsh Canadian wilderness. The immigrants we now have, have this quality because they gave up everything to get here and they have to support their family and to get land as well. They both are generous and determined also. This is because for the Loyalists they needed help pulling tree-trunks from the ground and neighbor would sometimes pitch in to help each other out, and determined to finish the land as soon as possible. The immigrants today though help each other out when in troubled times, and are determined to provide for their families and have a better live then what they had from where they came from. Well, Tories and immigrants today are very much the same and have almost the same qualities, even after centuries, in my own opinion.

Dear Premier McGuinty,

The people of Toronto should celebrate Simcoe Day on the first Monday in August for many reasons. One is John Graves Simcoe was a big part of stopping the use of slaves. The people of Toronto should realize what John Graves Simcoe did for all of them. Simcoe did way more then just stop the use of slaves, but he set many lives free. The people should all celebrate Simcoe Day!

Dear Premier McGuinty,

The people of Toronto celebrate Simcoe Day in honor and in memory of the great John Graves Simcoe. The finder of Ontario. But in other Province's they just take it as a civic holiday. We shouldn't just leave it as a civic day, we need to leave it as Simcoe Day. Because Mr. Simcoe and his family are the one who found Ontario. He stopped slavery in Canada stop. Which is a big thing because if he didn't stop we would still have slavery. Slavery is bad because your using poor people for work your to lazy to do. Thats why it should be called Simcoe Day not just civic day. We remember what John Graves Simcoe did for us, but were not going to remember it if it's called something else. So thank you for listening on my letter to you about keeping the name Simcoe Day.

Dear Premier McGuinty,

I think that all citizens of Ontario should celebrate Civic Day as Simcoe Day. I have three reason why he was the first governor of Ontario, he tried to help stop slavery and his road systems.
Firstly, I think all citizens of Ontario should celebrate August 1st as Simcoe Day because he is the first Governor. There's towns, museums, streets and a lake named after him. If all that is named after him it might come to peoples heads that he was an important person.
Secondly, Simcoe tried to stop slavery not in the best way but it happened. If Simcoe hadn't passed the no slavery law we would have lived in a slavery country until around when the Americans abolished slavery. Even though Simcoe didn't abolish slavery right away he still got it done way before the Americans did.
Lastly, Simcoes' road systems. He made blueprints and built some of Canada's first road system which ended up being very important. Even though Simcoe didn't create highways he still created road system for pioneers to transport from point A to point B faster.
In conclusion, Simcoe did all these great things for Ontario such as being the first governor of Ontario, stopping slavery and creating our road systems I think that Civic Day should officially be called Simcoe Day.

Dear Mr. McGuinty,
The holiday well known as Civic holiday shouldn't be called Civic Holiday. Everyone in Ontario should call it Simcoe day. The first governor of Upper Canada (Ontario) was John Graves Simcoe. He did alot for all of Ontario in his 4 years as governor. He changed the capital of the province from Newark (Niagra on the lake) to York. Whan he came he encouraged other people to come therefore, he helped the population grow.
When Simcoe came to Upper Canada he noticed a problem, the capital of Upper Canada was across a lake from the 13 colonies (USA) the place that most fleeing loyalists were trying to escape! He knew this was a big problem and that as governor he would have to solve it so he moved the capital to York.
When Simcoe came to Upper Canada he would visit the happy citizens and try to get involved with what the people of the colony were doing. He realized that the most popuplated town there had only 50 houses. He encouraged mistreated loyalists to come to the new colony and made the population grow.
Everyone in Ontario should know and think of John Graves Simcoe as a great person who did a lot in the development of Upper Canada. Doesn't he deserve some sort of thank you from the citizens of his colony that live here today? I think that the best way to show our gratitude and appreciation would be to name a day after this great man. I think that there should not be a Civic Holiday, it should be Simcoe Day!
Sincerely

Dear McGuinty,

Many years ago there was a man who came to Canada and helped us out, his name was John Graves Simcoe.
This man has done a lot for Canada, that's why we named many roads and even a lake after him. I say all this to get to the fact that on August 1st every year, we celebrate a civic holiday. There are many people in Toronto who call this day by it's rightful name which is Simcoe Day. I think that everyone in Canada should be calling it by this name.
This man John Graves Simcoe basically made Upper Canada to what it is today. He worked towards an equal life for everyone and a better government. So I really think that this one day of the year should be called Simcoe Day.

Thank you,

John Graves Simcoe is I guess you can say the founding father of Ontario. What he did for the province and for many other people was amazing. First of all he freed the slaves witch is a great feat. Then he organized the government of upper Canada or Ontario, and set up two councils The Executive council, and The Legislative council, these helped him run Upper Canada. He organized land into townships and planned the beginning of Ontario's highway system.

He then encouraged thousands of Late Loyalists to come to upper Canada I think that he deserves his own day, in witch he is named in.

I think that the loyalist would need to have hunting skills because there is many many many animals to hunt in the canada area like deer bear and many many more.

They would also need to be good with there hands to build homes and cut trees down with out hitting any ting when th trees fall to the ground.

phatboy26 said...

(1 out of 2) 2. I would think that loyalist coming into Canada would need skills to make fire, and cut down trees, they would to make there own food, hunting and surviving skills to stay alive agents animals and other people and /or even wild life plants like killer/danger's plants. Because with out that they could end up hurt or even dead!! the skills for this would take a longer time then they want. They would also need to know how to get along be nice to other people so if then need food or something like that even animal attacks then would need help you scratch there back they will scratch your. A if you not nice to them and you are getting attacked but animal like a bear or if you need food, then can say no because they don't like you. They could say "oh thats the mean ugly old not nice person getting attacked" they would not help you because you are mean. that is some of the things you would need going into Canada in this time zone.

I think that everyboby should celebrate Simcoe Day. The other countries celebrate it as Civic Holiday. I think that the other countries should celebrate it a Simcoe Day because he discovered Canada. He made the country what it is today. Even though he only had that little part called Upper Canada. Well that little part became more and more bigger as years gone by.
Even though it wasn't till about 1940 till it was as big today. But over those 100, it all started because of Upper Canada and Simcoe. Also the Simcoe family should be a part of Simcoe Day because it not only was John Simcoe it was also Eilzabeth Simcoe because she wanted the castle bit after her son Frank Simcoe. Also she alwaysed had big parties. So that is why I think you should call it Simcoe Day insterad of Civic Holiday.

Dear Mr. McGuinty

Today I am here to talk to you about the day when people celebrate Simcoe Day. The reason why i am here to talk to youu about this is because olny the people in Toronto celebrate this day when all of Ontario should bee celebrating this day. The reason why I think this, is because, John Graves Simcoe was the first governor of Upper Canada, and if we didn't have him then Canada today wouldn't be the same because he has done some great things for Canada and for Ontraio. Someof the great and amaizing things that Simcoe has done for Upper Canada and Ontario is he travalled all over Upper Canada and meet all the people and asked them what law would they want to be puut into afect. He travelled far and wide and sometimes he had to sleep in tents during the night, but he would find hunters, trappers, settalers, and Aboriginals peoples, and when he found them he asked about them what law they would like to be put into afect. One of the major laws that Simcoe put into the afect was the slaveory law. back in the U.S everyone had a slave and so did the Loyalists and so when they moved in to Upper Canada they brouught all of there slaves, so most of the people wanted them freed but some people didnt want tthem to be freed bcause that means that they have todo all of the work now. So Simcoe did what everyone wanted he said that slavory will only go on for another 25 yaers but then when that time was up, the slaves would be freed. So those were some of my reasons why that Simcoe day should be celebrated all over Ontario and I think that this should be a day that should be celebrated all over Ontario.

Pioneers immigrating to North America would have been hard for them because they just came from a war filled place. Coming to Canada was hard for them because they had to clear he land build houses and harvest food for their family. This was hard for them because these British people homes and food were produced for them thy didn't have to build or harvest anything.

Immigrants these days have all houses built for them all they have to do is find a job and a house they can afford and pay taxes on.

I think that there were many more talents that a Loyalist Pioneer needed to have then immigrants to Canada need nowadays.

Loyalist Pioneers:
One of the three main talents that I think a Loyalist Pioneer needed to posses was being able to farm. This would have been important because not all of your food could come from hunting. Also, to prevent diseases and stay healthy. One of the diseases that could result from this was scurvy. Scurvy was known at this time well because of the time period of the late 14 hundreds to the early 16 hundreds. Another important talent to have was the skill of hunting. Having this skill you could provide yourself with the food you could not grow in your garden, many of that would fall under the category of meat that would provide the loyalists bodies with the protein they needed. The last of the three main talents a loyalist pioneer would need was the skill to build and clear land. With this skill the loyalists could clear their land more quickly and efficiently than others as well as being able to put a shelter over their head(s) faster. This would also mean that they would have enough experience to be able to build small materials they would need to use to survive until they were provided with materials from Britain.

Modern Day Immigrants:
I think that modern immigrants need to posses three main skills as well, but these essential skills are very different from the ones that the Loyalist Pioneers needed. The first one is understanding different languages, especially english. This way the immigrants could easily communicate with other people while they are first getting themselves settled into their new lives. The second skill is having an experience with working. If you have worked before there is more of a chance that you will be successful in getting a job in Canada. The last would be working with technology Canada becomes more high tech every day, and being able to understand the main sources of technology, like computers, will help you get farther in understanding what you are doing and where you are going. One example of how understanding a computer would help you is that you could find out about Canada, and how to live well and survive well.

In my two lists I can see only one major similarity, and that is that both of the lists fit into the time period and help fulfill the needs of that perticular era.
SHOPAHOLIC.
